What’s in the local area?
Many of the top Lake District attractions are to be found at the village of Lakeside which is a few minutes walk away.
Lake Windermere Cruise Ships dock at Lakeside. You can take the lake cruiser from Lakeside to Bowness or Ambleside and leave the car at Woodside Cottage…a magical day out .
Steam Railway at Lakeside. From Lakeside you can take the steam railway to Haverthaite, it’s a great day out for all the family
Aquarium of the Lakes at Lakeside At the aquarium you can see otters, sea horses, fish etc. Children will love this.
Fell Foot Park – from Lakeside you can take the ferry to Fell Foot Park which is a National Trust country park that offers access to the shores of Lake Windermere. Stop off for a picnic, hire a rowing boat or simply admire the wonderful seasonal flowers. A new adventure playground has recently been introduced for children.
Bike hire at Lakeside all types of bike are available to hire and explore the area
High Dam ..a fabulous ramble to one of the most picturesque and peaceful lakes in the lake district. The Independent rated it as one of the top ten summer walks in the country. From Woodside you can walk upto the dams and then walk on to Stott Park Heights, for a breath taking panoramic view of Lake Windermere
Historic Sizergh Castle and Gardens, situated a few minutes drive away from Woodside it is now owned by the National Trust, although a member of the Strickland family, who have been in possesion of the house since 1239, still occupies their ancestral home. The castle is set in 14 acres of award winning lake and gardens.
Go Racing at Cartmel…15 mins drive from Woodside
Throughout the summer national hunt racing happens on the edge of the picturesque village of Cartmel. Its a great day out for all the family with picnics and fairground rides.
Cartmel Village (the home of sticky toffee pudding) is well worth a visit for it medieval priory, delightful shops,cobbled streets and food emporiums.
Lower Sizergh Barn – Eat homemade cakes whilst watching the cows being milked, then go for a walk on the farm trail. Please check their website for milking times.
Hawkshead Village…a must, shops, Beatrix Potter Museum
Hawkshead Trout Farm at Esthwaite Water have Trout Fishing, Winter Pike Fishing, Fly Fishing Tuition,
Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole has an adventure playground packed with rope walks, slides, swings, scramble nets and zip wires. Conquer the wooden fort or mess about on the shipwrecked boat! There’s also a lakeshore, jetty and trails around the gardens.
Holker Hall is the home of Lord and Lady Cavendish who welcome visitors of all ages to one of the best-loved stately homes in Britain. Magnificently situated only a short distance from Grange-over-Sands and the expanse of Morecambe Bay, Holker Hall is set in exceptionally beautiful countryside with gardens that merge into Parkland framed by the Lakeland Hills. There are many events throughout the year including a famous garden festival.
Go Ape at Grizedale Forest is a ‘high-wire forest adventure’.With giant obstacle courses up in the trees using ladders, walkways, bridges and tunnels made of wood, rope and super-strong wire, and top it all off with the country’s best zip lines.
